In theory, you can receive housing benefits while working,<strong> but the higher your income is, the less amount of housing allowance you receive<\/strong>. Because it is <strong>mandatory <\/strong>to take out Dutch health insurance as soon as you start working any job in the Netherlands, the insurance premium combined with exorbitant rent prices can take a toll on an entry-level salary. The following conditions of toeslagen apply to everyone.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41a83196 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"41a83196\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Rent Amount<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f60302c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f60302c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Aside from income, several other requirements are taken into account in determining your eligibility. The most important for deciding how much you receive depends on <strong>your age and the amount of rent you pay<\/strong> for your accommodation. If your calculated rent is too high, you will not receive any allowance.<\/p><p>In 2024, the calculated rent limits are split into two age groups (amounts are likely to change every year):<\/p><ul><li><strong>Ages 23 and above:<\/strong> 879,66 euros<\/li><li><strong>Between the ages 18 and 23:<\/strong> 454,47 euros<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e972296 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e972296\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The calculated rent is composed of both the basic rent <b>and<\/b> the cost of utilities. You should be able to find this total amount in your rental agreement. The composition of your household must be so that you have your own kitchen, your own bathroom, and most important: <strong>your own front door<\/strong> (private entrance that only you as the sole tenant can lock from the inside and outside).<\/p><p>For international students in particular, it is important to know that if you <strong>share your kitchen and toilet<\/strong> with other residents, then this is <em>not<\/em> an independent living space. Because of this, most student housing complexes are ineligible for housing allowance.<\/p><p>However, at the Citylifer, despite being a coliving space, our members still have the opportunity to be eligible for housing allowance because each member has their own independent apartment with a private entrance and bathroom. If you have an allowance partner, then you both need to apply for a DigiD. This process usually takes a few days because you will receive a letter by post to confirm your registered address and complete the application process.<\/span><\/p><p>Once you&#8217;ve made your DigiD, you can use it to login to most Dutch government websites where you need to manage your affairs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-44a4ac2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"44a4ac2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Apply Directly on 'MijnToeslagen'<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-712711f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"712711f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The official government website for allowances provides a link where you need to use your DigiD to login into the application portal (all in Dutch).\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-780beb61 elementor-align-center elementor-widget elementor-widget-button\" data-id=\"780beb61\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"button.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-button-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-button elementor-button-link elementor-size-sm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belastingdienst.nl\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/bldcontentnl\/belastingdienst\/prive\/toeslagen\/inloggen_op_mijn_toeslagen\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-button-content-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-button-text\">Login to MijnToeslagen<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-689e01ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"689e01ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2188cf74 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2188cf74\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\"><strong>Under the housing allowance (&#8216;huurtoeslag&#8217;) tab, click apply (&#8216;toepassen&#8217;).<\/strong><\/p><p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Some questions will arise where you will already need to know and fill in the amount of rent of your housing (basic rent <em>plus <\/em>service costs), your calculated income and that of your possible benefit partner.<\/p><p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">After filling in this form completely you can typically already see how much rent benefit you will receive based on your answers. Finalise the application with the &#8216;apply&#8217; button and the application should be confirmed! If somehow the information you put in changed sometime after your application, you can always log back in and contact the organisation of the necessary changes.<\/p><p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Don&#8217;t forget! If you need any more allowances, for example, for health insurance or child-related, you can also apply for this in the same MijnToeslagen portal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5e622a5b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5e622a5b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">When Will I Receive the Housing Allowance?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a565e6a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2a565e6a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">You will usually will hear back about the results of your toeslag application via e-mail <strong>within 5 weeks.<\/strong> If something is wrong or they need more information, this can take even longer &#8211; up to 13 weeks. So make sure you know you&#8217;re eligible for benefits!<\/p><p>If your application is successful, the payments of your rent benefit (and all other allowances) will occur monthly on the same day, which is usually the<strong> 20th of each month<\/strong>. If you apply for rent allowance past this date, then you will need to wait for the next payment day. Do you no longer need the rent allowance and\/or no longer entitled to it? Simply log back into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belastingdienst.nl\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/bldcontentnl\/belastingdienst\/prive\/toeslagen\/inloggen_op_mijn_toeslagen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MijnToeslagen portal<\/a> and cancel it. You can choose to cancel it from a specific date or as soon as possible.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1c84a882 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1c84a882\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Paying the Rent Benefit Back<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5658eca4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5658eca4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">At the end of each calendar year you will receive a document from the Belastingdienst stating how much allowance you received that year. If you received <strong>too much allowance <\/strong>(a surcharge), then an additional invoice will be sent where you will have to pay some of it back. However, if the amount is less than 100 euros, then this does <em>not <\/em>need to be paid!<\/p><p>To prevent such return payments, make sure to <strong>report any financial changes<\/strong> as soon as possible in the MijnToeslag portal.
