Residential waste in The Netherlands is managed by the municipality. This means Rotterdam will manage the trash collection day and will show you the location of bulk waste disposal and recycling spots. Therefore, if you have any doubts or problems regarding trash you can always check the website of Rotterdam’s municipality. In this blog post we will also explain a bit about this. If you’re looking for a the nearest waste containers you can check out the map on the website of the municipality which you can find below:
The map indicates the location of the different types of waste containers in Rotterdam such as organic waste, glass, paper, amongst others.
Your trash can be classified into two main categories: household waste and bulky waste. The first is all the waste produced by standard daily activities that can easily fit in a bin, while the second is the waste that is not part of standard daily activities and does not fit in a bin.
Household Waste
As mentioned previously the municipality of Rotterdam works on a waste container basis which can be found in all neighbourhoods of Rotterdam. This means that you are responsible for sorting your trash into glass recycling, paper recycling and residual waste bins. The semi-submerged containers have filling sensors, this means that once the containers are full a signal is sent to the municipality and they will empty it as soon as possible.
However, if you happen to find a container that is full, do not put your trash next to the container. Instead, walk to the next container closest to you which you can find on the map as mentioned at the beginning of this blog post. This way you avoid littering the street, and most importantly, you avoid the possibility of receiving a fine.
If you live in a multi-story building you will probably dispose of your waste in a collective bin. If you need to dispose of your trash on a non-collection day then you can also search for one of the many residual waste bins throughout Rotterdam via the map of the municipality, which you can find on via the button previously mentioned.
Waste to Recycle
In Rotterdam they separate their waste Rotterdam. This is good for the environment as it means that there is little residual waste left. A lot of the waste can be reused, such as paper, glass and old clothing.
To understand how the municipality handles all different categories of trash, they created this handy FAQ waste guide where they explain all items in detail. For example batteries can be handed in at specific shops or supermarkets such as Albert Heijn.
Bulk Waste
If you have a lot of bulk waste or bigger items to dispose, for this kind of bulk waste, you can call the municipal service number (010) 267 16 25 for it to be collected. You can also make an online appointment to have it picked up or dispose of it in one of Rotterdam’s Milieuparken. You can find the location of the Milieuparken here.
